Metrorail from the airport, the Route 150 bus to Miami Beach, the free Metromover and trolleys, water taxis, taxis and Uber, and when a rental car makes sense: here is how to get around, with honest advice on paying for rides, taxi and ride-app costs, and day trips without a car.

How do you get from Miami airport to the city?
Take Metrorail from Miami airport to downtown, and the Route 150 bus to Miami Beach. Both cost $2.25. First ride the free MIA Mover from the airport’s 3rd level to the Miami Intermodal Center.
On weekdays, the Orange Line reaches Government Center in 15 minutes and Brickell in 17 minutes. In the evening and at weekends, a shuttle train runs to Earlington Heights. Change there to the Green Line.
The Route 150 bus runs about every 30 minutes, every day. It takes about 36 minutes to Lincoln Road and 46 minutes to South Pointe Drive, at the south end of South Beach.
Taxis wait outside baggage claim. From Fort Lauderdale airport, take the free shuttle to the Tri-Rail station; the train reaches Miami airport in 43 minutes. Not sure which area to pick? See where to stay in Miami.

How do you get around Miami without a car?
You can get around Miami without a car by mixing free rides with cheap ones. Start with the free ones: the Metromover, the trolleys and Freebee cost nothing. Four services do most of the work:
- Metromover: free, downtown and in Brickell.
- Trolley: the Miami Beach Trolley is free and runs 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, about every 20 minutes. The City of Miami has its own free trolley on the mainland.
- Freebee: free rides in electric cars in Mid Beach and parts of North Beach. Book in the Ride Freebee app about 20 minutes ahead.
- MetroConnect: an on-demand shuttle that replaced GO Connect. Weekdays only, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. A trip costs $3.75, or $1.50 if it starts or ends at a transit hub.
How do the Metrorail, Metromover and buses work, and what do they cost?
Metrorail and Metrobus cost $2.25 a ride, rising to $2.75 in January 2027. The Metromover is free. Transfers between buses and trains are free.
A 1-Day Pass costs $5.65 and a 7-Day Pass $29.25. Metrorail runs from 5 a.m. to midnight, every day.
Metro Express is a new electric bus line with 14 stations. It runs from SW 344th Street to Dadeland South Metrorail, in the far south of the county.
How do you pay for Miami transit?
The easiest way to pay is to tap your bank card or phone. You never pay more than $5.65 a day for Metrorail and Metrobus on the same card.
An EASY Card costs $2. You can also buy passes in the GO Miami-Dade Transit app. Check that your mobile pass shows as active before you board.
Tri-Rail takes the EASY Card too. Buy your Tri-Rail fare before you board, since it is not sold on the train.
Are there water taxis, ferries and trolleys?
Yes. A free water taxi links Miami Beach and Downtown Miami on weekdays, and free trolleys run in both cities.
Want your own boat on the bay instead? See our guide: Yacht rental in Miami.
The Miami water taxi
The free water taxi runs between 18th Street and Purdy Avenue in Miami Beach and 1635 N Bayshore Drive in Miami. The crossing takes about 20 minutes.
It runs Monday to Friday only. Boats leave every hour from 7 a.m., and every 30 minutes from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is no service at weekends or on federal holidays.
Is Uber or a taxi cheaper in Miami?
It depends on the day, because Uber fares change with demand. Taxi fares are set by a meter, so you can work them out.
From the airport, a taxi costs $7.20 for the first mile and $3.30 for each mile after. Add a $2 airport fee and $0.40 a minute waiting in traffic. The minimum fare from the airport is $15.
SUVs and vans cost 30% more. Uber and Lyft pick up on the arrivals and departures levels at the airport; the app shows your door.
Can a hop-on hop-off bus be your transport?
A hop-on hop-off bus works as transport if you mainly want the sights. Our pick has 10 stops and a ticket valid for 2 days.
It costs more than Metrobus but needs no planning. Compare the options in our guide to the hop-on hop-off bus in Miami.
How do you do day trips without a car?
Fort Lauderdale is the easiest day trip on your own: take Tri-Rail or Brightline. Key West works by bus or car. The Everglades really needs a car or a tour.
There is no public transport to Shark Valley or the airboat parks. A seasonal trolley from Homestead reaches the main park entrance in winter only. See our Everglades airboat tours for rides with a bus from Miami.
Bimini leaves from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Our guide to the Bahamas ferry from Miami covers the ferry and passports. For Orlando, Brightline runs there from MiamiCentral.
Compare every trip in our guide to Day trips from Miami. The table below shows each route.
Bus tickets to and from Miami
Greyhound runs from Miami to Key West three times a day, from $23.48. It takes about 4.5 hours and stops at the Miami Intermodal Center and 4101 Collins Ave in Miami Beach.
Tri-Rail to Fort Lauderdale costs $6 one way on weekdays. At weekends, a $5 day pass covers every trip.

Do you need a rental car in Miami?
You do not need a rental car in Miami itself. In South Beach and Downtown, the free trolley, the Metromover and the 150 bus cover most trips. A car pays off for the Everglades and the Keys.
Parking in South Beach costs $4 an hour on the street, from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. Miami Beach city garages charge up to $20 a day. The MIA Rental Car Center is a free MIA Mover ride from the terminal.
In the 2026 Miami Travel Cost Study, 5 car rental sites quoted average daily prices from $37 to $100 for a rental car in Miami, read on 23 October 2026, before insurance, fuel, tolls and parking.
