Things to Do in Miami Downtown: 6 Stops on One Walk

Downtown Miami high-rises seen from the water under a cloudy sky

The best things to do in Miami downtown are close together along Biscayne Boulevard. They are Bayfront Park, Bayside Marketplace, the Freedom Tower, the Pérez Art Museum and a free ride on the Metromover. You can see all of them in one day on foot. The Freedom Tower and the museum are closed on different days, so pick your day first.

1. Bayfront Park: a free waterfront start

Bayfront Park is a free, 32-acre park on Biscayne Bay at 301 Biscayne Blvd, and it makes the best first stop. The park's own site says it is open every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. It has green lawns, public art, a playground, a dog park, a waterfront walk and the Mildred and Claude Pepper Fountain, which runs water, music and light shows.

Go early, when the park is quiet and the heat is lower. The fountain schedule can change for repairs or events, so do not plan your morning around a show. Concerts at the park's amphitheater are listed on the same site if you want an evening there.

The park is easy to reach without a car. The Metromover, covered in entry 5, is free and stops downtown.

2. Bayside Marketplace: lunch, shops and the boats

Bayside Marketplace is the shopping and dining center on the bay, at 401 Biscayne Blvd, and it is where the bay cruises leave from. Bayside's visit page lists hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Shops and restaurants keep their own hours.

You can take the Metromover Inner Loop to the College/Bayside stop and walk one block east. From the Port of Miami, the free Coral Way trolley stops on Biscayne Boulevard. Parking is paid.

No official page gives a walking time across downtown, so we do not guess one. The stops in this article all sit on Biscayne Boulevard, and the free Metromover links them if you get tired.

Bayside calls itself a place for shopping, dining and entertainment, and it has the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel. Other downtown restaurant and bar areas are not published on any official page we checked. For a set lunch stop on this walk, Bayside is the safe choice.

You do not need a tour to see downtown on foot. A tour only adds something on the water. Best Things to Do in Miami's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 21 tours that start in or pass through Downtown Miami, Bayside or the Miami River, from €11. The classic is the Millionaire's Row cruise, from €31 per person, which takes 1.5 hours and meets at 401 Biscayne Blvd. It is run by Island Queen Cruises, rated 4.4 from 1,142 reviews, and has free cancellation. That many reviews make the rating a solid guide. The price covers the narrated bay cruise with a captain and a guide who speaks Spanish and English. Food, drinks and tips are not included. The listing allows up to 70 people, so this is a big boat, not a private trip. Prices were checked on GetYourGuide on 23 October 2026. The bay cruises that leave from Bayside are collected in our fisher island ferry terminal miami boat tour guide.

Pro Tip Eat at Bayside before a cruise, and show up at 401 Biscayne Blvd well before the boat leaves.

3. The Freedom Tower: free parking and a refugee story

The Freedom Tower at 600 Biscayne Blvd is a 1920s newspaper building that later became a Cuban refugee center. The National Park Service says construction began in 1924 and the building opened in July 1925 as the home of the Miami Daily News. The government leased it from July 1, 1962, and opened the Cuban Assistance Center there. The center closed in 1974, and the building became a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008, according to the National Park Service. It is called the "Ellis Island of the South" by the park service. From 1962 to 1974, Cuban refugees came here for help with health care, housing, money and school. In the park service's words, no other building shows the Cuban exodus of the Cold War years so clearly.

Today Miami Dade College runs it as a museum. The tourist board's listing gives hours of Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and says tickets are required and should be bought in advance. It does not list a price, so check the ticket page before you go. The permanent shows cover Miami's immigration story, art from the Americas and the history of soccer.

Parking is free in the college garage at 500 NE Second Avenue. The garage is closed on Sundays, and visitors then use Parking Lot 1 on the south side of the building.

4. Pérez Art Museum Miami: a Thursday night plan

The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is the biggest art stop downtown, at 1103 Biscayne Blvd between the Arsht Center and the Kaseya Center. PAMM's visit page lists these hours: Monday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Adults pay $18. Seniors, students and youth aged 7 to 18 pay $14, and children 6 and under are free. Admission is free on Thursdays after 5 p.m. Veterans and active military, first responders, health care workers, Florida educators and visitors with a disability plus a caregiver also get in free with ID.

Thursday is the best day for your whole walk. Both museums are open, PAMM stays open until 9 p.m., and entry is free after 5 p.m.

Key Takeaway Plan your downtown day for a Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, because the Freedom Tower and PAMM are both closed on Tuesday and each is closed on one other day.

5. The Metromover: a free ride over downtown

The Metromover is a free train on raised tracks that loops through downtown, and it is the easiest way to see the streets from above. Miami-Dade County says it runs from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. A train comes about every 90 seconds at rush hour and every 3 minutes at other times. The county's fare page also lists the Metromover as free.

There are 21 stations and three loops: Omni, Inner and Brickell. For a first ride, take the Inner Loop, which stops at College/Bayside near Bayside Marketplace. The county page lists temporary station closures, so check it on the day.

6. Downtown at night: the Miami River and the lights

Downtown is quieter after dark than South Beach, and two tours use that. The Miami River night paddle, from €79 per person, is a 2-hour stand-up paddle or kayak trip run by Soflo Water Adventures. It meets at 205 SW 3rd St, takes up to 13 people, and is rated 4.8 from 91 reviews. Boards, kayaks, life jackets, water and drinks with alcohol are included. Hotel pickup is not included. The listing says it is not suited to people with mobility impairments or low fitness, and it has free cancellation.

If you would rather sit, the Big Bus night tour is a 1.5-hour open-top bus ride from 333 Biscayne Blvd, from €32 per person. It is rated 4.4 from 675 reviews and includes a live guide. Hotel pickup is not included, and tips are extra. The group size is not listed.

A small-group option for a first day is the city bus tour with downtown pickup, from €70 per person. It runs 5 hours with a pickup included, takes up to 14 people, and is rated 4.9 from 47 reviews. The pickup point depends on your hotel, and nothing is listed as not included. Prices in this entry were checked on GetYourGuide on 23 October 2026. It passes the financial district and the port. If you prefer a big open-top loop, see our guide to a bus tour in miami.

Every city looks different from the water, and downtown Miami looks best from the bay.

How to choose: things to do in Miami downtown or South Beach

Stay downtown if you want transit, museums and the bay, and stay in South Beach if the ocean beach is the main reason you came. Downtown has three clear advantages. You can ride the free Metromover to the sights, walk to two museums, and board bay cruises at Bayside. Downtown sits on Biscayne Bay and has no ocean beach, so a beach day means a ride to Miami Beach. Parking is another cost if you drive: on-street meters in South Beach are $4 an hour, according to the City of Miami Beach.

Downtown is easier without a car. The Metromover is free, and Metrorail and Metrobus cost $2.25 per trip, as Miami-Dade Transit lists. The county has approved a rise to $2.75 from January 2027. Our page on getting around Miami without a car covers the passes.

citizenM Miami Worldcenter is a 4-star hotel in the Worldcenter area with a pool and a 24-hour front desk. Hampton Inn & Suites Miami Downtown/Brickell is one minute from a free Metromover stop. For other areas, see our page on where to stay in Miami. No official page ranks Miami areas by safety, so use the care you would use in any big city, especially at night.

Downtown is the wrong base for a beach trip, and the museums are closed on some weekdays. If you also have time for the street art and food, Wynwood and Little Havana are next on the list. For rainy hours, see Miami things to do inside, and for the Worldcenter area, the Museum of Ice Cream is downtown too.

See downtown Miami from the water

You do not need a tour for the walk itself, because the stops are close together and the park and the Metromover are free. A tour wins only for the bay and the river, which you cannot see from the water on foot. Bayside is where the bay cruises leave, and the downtown picks below run from €31 for a 1.5-hour cruise to €79 for a night paddle on the Miami River, as checked on GetYourGuide on 23 October 2026. Each one has free cancellation, and each card names the operator, the rating and the number of reviews.
